1How can my university participate in the competition?
To participate, your university must register for the competition by downloading both the registration and consent forms from the competition website (www.uwmoot.org). After filling in the forms, they should be endorsed and stamped by the dean of the school of law and submitted to info@unwantedwitness.org.
2What is the theme of the 2024 Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot Court Competition?
The theme for this year's competition is "Safeguarding Electoral Integrity: Upholding Voter Privacy in Democratic Processes."
3What is the objective of this year's moot court competition?
The primary objective of this year's competition is to emphasize the ethical utilization of technologies, such as biometrics, in collecting personal data during electoral processes. Additionally, the competition aims to highlight the importance of fair and lawful practices in accessing and safeguarding voter privacy rights.
4Who is eligible to participate in the competition?
The competition is open exclusively to law students from participating universities in Uganda and Kenya.
5What is the format of the competition?
The competition involves simulated legal proceedings in English, starting with written submissions evaluated by a committee of senior law experts. Qualified teams then progress to the oral phase, where they face challenging queries from judges. The final round features teams arguing a hypothetical case centered on the right to privacy and data protection before esteemed judges.
6When is the pre-moot conference taking place?
The pre-moot conference will be held at Daystar University Nairobi Campus on Thursday, 12th September, 2024.
7When are the preliminary rounds scheduled for each country?
The preliminary rounds for Kenya will be held at Daystar University Nairobi Campus on Friday, 13th September, 2024. For Uganda, they will be held at Islamic University in Uganda on Monday, 16th September, 2024.
8Where will the quarter-finals take place?
The quarter-finals will be held at Daystar University Nairobi Campus on Thursday, 19th September, 2024.
9Can you provide information on the semi-finals and finals?
The semi-finals will also take place at Daystar University Nairobi Campus on Friday, 20th September, 2024, in the morning. The finals and award ceremony will follow in the afternoon of the same day.
10What are the prizes and awards for the competition?
The competition will recognize exceptional performances with awards such as first place ($1,000, a trophy, medals, certificates, and a fully paid trip to attend the 6th Privacy Symposium Africa), second place ($500, a trophy, and certificates), best overall oralist (an accolade and a certificate), best written submissions for the Applicant and Respondent (certificates), and each participant will receive a certificate of participation.
11Who will be the judges for the competition?
Eminent law specialists from academia, judicial, and administrative backgrounds, representing constitutional institutions and public bodies, will preside over the competition.
12Which universities are participating in the competition?
Participating universities include esteemed law schools from Uganda and Kenya. A list of participating universities is provided on the competition website
13Is there any specific requirement for the submission of memorials?
Yes, memorials must be submitted on or before 23:59 Hours Friday, June 28th, 2024, as per the competition timeline provided on the website.
14When is the deadline for registration?
The deadline for registration is Friday, 19th April 2024.
