COMMUNIQUÉ: ROADMAP OF THE 4TH EDITION OF THE UNWANTED WITNESS PRIVACY MOOT COURT COMPETITION 2025
The Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot Court Competition 2025 shall be conducted in two (2) distinct phases, each subject to separate evaluation: the Written Round (Memorials) and the Oral Round (Hearings).
The oral round will be further divided into three (3) stages: National Rounds (Preliminary Rounds and Quarter-Final Rounds), Semi-Final Rounds, and Final Rounds.
Phase 1: Written Memorials
All participating teams will first compete in the written memorial phase, where their submissions will be evaluated based on legal analysis, argumentation, structure, and adherence to formatting requirements as per the Moot rules 2025. The assessment of the written memorials will be conducted independently of the oral rounds.
Upon completion of the evaluation of written memorials, and after applying any applicable penalty deductions, the four (4) highest-ranking teams from each participating country shall qualify to participate in the National Rounds.
Phase 2: National Rounds (Preliminary and Quarter-Final Rounds)
Each participating country shall host its own National Rounds, comprising the Preliminary Rounds and Quarter-Final Rounds. The highest-ranked teams from the written memorial phase will advance to this stage.
The National Rounds will take place as follows:
- Kenya National Rounds: Thursday, 11th September 2025, at Daystar University, Athi River
- Uganda National Rounds: Monday, 15th September 2025, at Uganda Christian University, Mukono
- Rwanda National Rounds: Thursday, 18th September 2025, at INES-Institute of Applied Sciences
- Tanzania National Rounds: Monday, 22nd September 2025, at University of Dar es Salaam
The best-performing teams from each country at the National Rounds will proceed to the next phase.
Phase 3: Semi-Final and Final Rounds
Following the conclusion of the National Rounds, the qualifying teams will advance to the Semi-Final and Final Rounds, which will be held consecutively in the hosting country, Tanzania. These rounds will take place at the University of Dar es Salaam.
- Semi-Finals: The top teams from the National Rounds will compete against each other, demonstrating their advocacy and legal reasoning skills before a panel of esteemed judges.
- Finals: The best two teams from the Semi-Finals will proceed to the Final Round, where they will compete for the championship title of the 4th Edition of the Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot Court Competition.
Assessment and Progression
The written and oral phases of the Competition shall be assessed independently.
Qualification to the National Rounds is determined based on the teams’ performance in the written memorials.
The oral rounds will be judged on oral advocacy, legal reasoning, presentation, and responsiveness to the bench.
We encourage all participating universities to prepare rigorously for this prestigious competition and look forward to witnessing groundbreaking legal arguments in with this years moot theme.
