UW Privacy Moot 2025 Overview

The Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot Court Competition has evolved into one of East Africa’s premier platforms for nurturing legal talent and promoting dialogue on pressing issues in data protection and privacy.

Since its inception, the competition has grown exponentially, starting with universities from Uganda and expanding to include Kenya in the 2024 edition. The 2025 Edition marked a significant milestone as it went fully regional, bringing together universities from four East African countries—Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda—in a celebration of legal excellence and cross-border collaboration.

The 2025 edition was hosted at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and focused on a critical theme at the intersection of technology and human rights: data protection and privacy in national ID systems.

Focus Area and Objective

The theme for the 2025 edition, "Safeguarding Personal Data in National Digital ID Systems," underscored the vital need to address data protection challenges within the realm of national identification systems.

As digital identity becomes integral to governance, service delivery, and economic participation, concerns about privacy breaches, data security, and inclusivity remain paramount. The competition focused on these pressing issues, aiming to:

  1. Cultivate a deep understanding of data protection and privacy laws among the next generation of East African lawyers.
  2. Encourage robust debate and innovative legal arguments on the regulation of digital ID systems.
  3. Foster regional cooperation and dialogue on harmonizing data protection standards across East Africa.
  4. Highlight the role of legal practitioners in safeguarding human rights in the digital age.

This year’s edition did more than crown a winner—it cemented the competition’s role as a catalyst for legal innovation and regional integration. Participants debated real-world issues tied to digital identity, privacy enforcement and constitutionalism in the digital age. The arguments presented affirmed a growing truth: data protection is no longer peripheral—it is central to governance, human dignity and human rights enforcement.

Format and Structure

The competition involved universities from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, engaging in a rigorous series of rounds to showcase their advocacy and legal research skills in Data Protection and Privacy Law. Participants analyzed a moot problem centered on data protection and privacy in national ID systems. Teams argued for both the Applicant and the Respondent, providing a comprehensive exploration of the issues.

The 2025 Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot Court Competition recognised exceptional performances with awards such as:

  1. Overall Champion: $1,500, a trophy, medals, certificates, and a fully paid trip to attend the 7th Privacy Symposium Africa.
  2. 1st Runners-Up: $500, a trophy, and certificates.
  3. Best Overall Oralist: An accolade and a certificate.
  4. Best Written Submissions for the Applicant: An accolade and a certificate.
  5. Best Written Submissions for the Respondent: An accolade and a certificate.

Moot 2025 Bootcamps

The Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot Court Competition Bootcamp serves as a preparatory platform for registered teams participating in the competition. It aims to enhance participants’ understanding of privacy law, moot court advocacy skills, and competition procedures equipping Mooters with the necessary knowledge and skills to excel in the Unwanted Witness Privacy Moot Court Competition

Unlike it's predecessors, the 2025 edition had three phases of the Bootcamp; Introduction to Data Protection and Privacy (held - 13th May 2025), Written Submissions Bootcamp (held - 14th May 2025), and the Oral Presentations Bootcamp (held - 15th May 2025)
